Throughout the Ligurian Riviera, Camogli is one of the most unique places: the town has preserved the ancient maritime Ligurian traditions for centuries. Camogli literally means the house ("Ca") of wives ("mogli"), meaning the wives of all sailors waiting at home for their husbands.
Camogli is located on the western side of Mount Portofino and is considered one of the most memorable towns in the entire Gulf of Tigullio. It has always been visited by famous artists, writers and nobles such as Gabriele d'Annunzio, Queen Margaret, Princes of Savoy, Italo Balbo, Guglielmo Marconi, Friedrich Nietzsche, Kim Novak, Orson Welles and many other world celebrities.
San Fruttuoso di Camogli (famous for its medieval abbey) and Portofino are a short ferry ride away.
Trekkers can try the famous hiking trail from Camogli to Portofino. The local streets (karudji) are full of colorful fishermen's houses, decorated with frescoes with the typical tromp l'oeil technique: like a stage design, statues, bas-reliefs and balustrades are painted on the facades.
This town, thanks in part to its port (still used by fishermen as before), is an example of the Italian architectural style.
